HWC Baseball Week 10 Recap

We're 1 week away from the halfway point of the HWC Baseball, and the play-off races are already starting to be visible. Some teams have a chance to play in the post season, others don't have a prayer. But before we get into that, lets remind the fans how we tally the scores here. Pairs of teams go head to head for a week adding up stats and the best score in each stat gets a win. The other team gets a loss for that stat. There are 13 stats to combine; On offense there are Runs, Hits, Home Runs, RBI's, Stolen Bases and Strike Outs. On the defensive side It's all pitching with Wins, Losses Saves, K's ERA and WHIP. Scoring combines like This. Team A wins 4 stats, and team B wins 8, with the teams tying one. Team A's record for the week is 4-8-1, where team B is 8-4-1.

And now to the scores.

Cookeville Engineers - 8
PFB - 4 (Tie in Saves)
This game was steady offensive and defensive dominance. With the Engineers going 65 of 213 in hitting with 8 Stolen bases 31 RBI's, 7 wins, 50 K's, and an ERA of only 1.89 with a WHIP of just 0.95, it's hard to combat. However there is a sad statistic for the Engineers. They are no longer undefeated in offensive K's (lost 39-40), and have fallen to third in total. One thing that will hurt PFB in the future is the loss of Mark Tiexiera to a strained quad.
Game MVP: Chone Figgins - 13/30 with 5 RBI's, 7 Runs, and 7 stolen bases, with 5 coming in 2 games, and 10 in the last 10 games.
Game Goat: PFB's Offensive Coaching - Had 2 players on his bench with 10 or more hits last week.

Robots Eat Babies - 6
Anna Benson Is Yummy - 7
The Man can hit, but he can't score! Only 17 RBI's, and 2 home runs on 60 hits. That will ruin any week. He also pitched pretty well, but he could not avoid losing. Two loses came from a pitcher who lost 2 games, despite his week ERA of 2.77. The Man might have been unlucky this week, but Wyatt definitely was not lucky because of it. He earned this win.
Game MVP: David Wright - 8/23 with 4 home runs 6 RBI's and runs, a stolen base, and only 4 K's.
Game Goat: Ryan Howard - He might have hit 2 over the fence, but he struck out 10 of27 at bats, which is more than he got hits (8).

Baseball Rulz! - 1
Fmragtops Spewers - 10 (Ties in Wins and Saves)
Wow! FM put a hurt on Sssteve. That game dropped Sssteve 3 spots from 9th to 12th, and put FM up 3 to 8th from 11th. Both teams were very close on both sides, but FM definitely took advantage of the saying, "It doesn't matter if you win by 1 or 100, you still won." Sssteve played pretty well, but FM just played that minute bit better.
Game MVP: Gary Sheffield - 10/24 with 4 home runs, 11 RBI's, 6 runs, and only one strike out.
Game Goat: Mike Lowell - If one player can kill you, he's the one this week. 2/20 with only 2 RBI's and 2 K's. Any other help on offense was dreadfully needed.

The PAWs - 6
webcats - 5 (Ties in Home Runs and RBI's)
For the most part, the offensive battle was fought tooth and nail, but on pitching Lawhawk dominated on non-decisions. His pitchers had a pretty high ERA of 4.15, but still won the stat, and won Losses on the back of the starter's bullpen. On the other hand, the cats just lost. Only one win was all it took to take the wins column, but 5 losses killed the rest. And despite his 4 home runs, Prince Fielder lost the MVP award because of his 8 K's.
Game MVP: Troy Glaus - 10/22 with 2 home runs, 4 RBI's, and 5 runs with only 4 K's
Game Goat: webcat's pitching - Just one win, 5 losses and a 4.56 ERA hurts.

bRight & Early - 4
Wookies Will Repeat - 9
b&E just did not show up this week. He batted only .215, and of course when that happens, you usually lose almost all of the offensive stats. He also suffered in pitching with a 5.66 team ERA, setting up another uphill battle that could not be won. Wookies went 6-1-0 on offense and then and even 3-3 in pitching to take the cake this week. The battle is close for the middle slots in the championship race, and b&E fell 3 spots to be out of it right now in 7th.
Game MVP: - Alber Pujols - He's baaaaaaaaaaack. 8/22 with 4 home runs 9 RBI's, and 5 runs to signal he's still the man.
Game Goat: Tim Hudson - 2 games, 8 innings, and 10 earned for an ERA of 11.25 and a WHIP of 2.13.

RFTR - 11
Joe's Keizer Killers - 1 (Tie in Saves)
RFTR went buck wild this week. With only one player under .300, he batted .389, racking up an amazing 84 hits, 42 runs, 52 RBI's 10 Home Runs, and 6 stolen bases on offense. Now how he won pitching is beyond me considering that he only has 3 active starting pitchers. They managed 3 wins and 0 losses, but he also won K's with just 30 K's, and his bullpen gave him an ERA of 2.08, and a WHIP of 0.73. RFTR has a great offense (5 batters this week with 10+ hits) which has now vaulted him up to 3rd with this whooping, but a saying goes, "A dog that s$%^s fast won't s#$% long." Let's see how long this lucky train lasts.
Game MVP: Alex Rodriguez - 10/25 with 4 home runs, 16 RBI's, 7 Runs, and a stolen base with only 5 K's
Game Goat: Bronson Arroyo - 6 2/3 innings giving up 6 runs. He's also 0-5 in his last 7 starts.

JAX Juggernauts - 9
Big Damn Heroes - 3 (Tie in Runs)
BDH was in 7th after climbing up from 13th, but after this loss has dropped back to 9th, 5 games behind the 6th place, and and only 2.5 games ahead of 13th. JAX is now in 13th after winning 3 of the last 4 weeks. JAX had a great week, batting .337, and his pitchers went 5-0 with only a 1.06 team ERA and 0.76 WHIP. Only Takashi Saito had an ERA over 2.7. Three pitchers finished the week with a 0.00 ERA, one had a 2.25, and one with a 2.7. This was a great week for JAX, and maybe...just maybe things will turn around for them.
Game MVP: JAX's team - Just incredible.
Game Goat: Jason Bay - 1/23 with 7 K's and his only hit was a home run.

GAME OF THE WEEK:
Leones de Yucatan - 8
Maximum Poo - 5
I'll give Tyler credit where credit is due. On Saturday, Tyler had gone from being down 11-0, to tied up at 6 a piece. Despite that, the Lions absolutely killed Tyler on offense. Vex scored a powerful .338 average, including 74 hits, 16 Home Runs, 37 RBI's, and 35 Runs with just 38 K's. Tyler only batted a .277 when his season average is a .304, but he did take the cake in pitching. He only got one win and 3 losses, but it was enough to beat out Vex's 0-4 pitching with just one save. This game was great for Vex, but in all honesty, it was fluke for Tyler. Look for Tyler to have a killing this week.
Game MVP: Alfonso Soriano - 13/30 with 4 Home Runs, 8 RBI's, 7 Runs, and just 5 K's.
Game Goat: Tyler D. - Dude! Casey Blake is in the middle of a 21 game hit streak...and he's on the bench! Bench Bill Hall, and put in Blake.

Well, that's this week's recap, and here's a view of the match ups for Week 11. I'll have a mid-season analysis of the league, including ranks, my thoughts on each team, and where I think they may end up in September.
